KEYWORD RESEARCH

What the numbers tell you

Keyword research starts with finding out what people search for. A page about a term nobody searches for brings in no visitors, however well it's written. Search volume shows where the demand is.

Don't automatically pick the keyword with the highest volume. A broad keyword attracts a lot of competition. A more specific term, with a city or a service in it, often brings the customer who already knows what they want. You find terms like that among the related keywords in your results: add them to your list and compare them side by side.

Want to know which search terms fit your own site, and whether you're already found for them? Then run the keyword rank checker.

  1. 1

    Search volume

How often people in the United States search for the keyword each month, averaged over the past year.

  2. 2

    The past year

Which month gets the most searches and which the fewest. That shows you whether a keyword is seasonal, and when your page or article needs to be ready.

  3. 3

    What the searcher wants

Whether someone wants to know something, is still comparing or is ready to buy. That decides what kind of page fits the keyword.

  4. 4

    Related keywords

Keywords that contain your term, each with its own volume. The questions people ask are listed separately. Often there's a more specific keyword among them with less competition.

Keyword research in 3 steps

With the keyword research tool and the keyword rank checker you can do simple keyword research for your own site, without an account.

  1. 1

    Look up your main term

Start with what a customer types in when they need you, for example your service with your city. Feel free to add a few variations below it, up to 10 at a time. You see how often people search for it and what the searcher wants.

  2. 2

    Pick from the related keywords

Each result comes with keywords that contain your term, with the questions people ask listed separately. Add the ones that fit what you offer to your list with one click, then look them all up at once. A question often makes a good topic for a page or your FAQ.

  3. 3

    Check where you rank now

The keyword rank checker reads your homepage, finds up to 10 search terms that fit what you offer and shows whether you're already on page 1 of Google for them.

FAQ about the keyword research tool

Search volume is how often people search for a keyword each month. The keyword research tool shows the average for Google in the United States over the past year, plus the month with the most searches and the month with the fewest.

They're estimates for Google in the United States, not exact measurements. They're good for comparing keywords with each other.

Either very few people in the United States search for it, or Google withholds the number. That happens with some medical terms, among others. If Google's number is missing, the tool uses a second source: an estimate based on measured search and click behavior.

A good keyword fits what you offer, enough people search for it, and the searcher wants something your page can give them. A specific keyword with less volume can bring in more customers than a broad term everyone wants to rank for. The keyword rank checker works out which keywords fit your own site.

Yes, and you don't need an account. You can run 10 lookups a day, with up to 10 keywords each, and you see the related keywords Google suggests right away. Enter your email address and you also see how often people search for your own terms, and you get the rest of the numbers in your inbox. You can do that twice a day. You add a related keyword to your list with one click; that only uses a lookup once you look up the list.

Enter the keyword at the top of this page, or a few at once, one per line. Then enter your email address below the results. You'll see right away how often people in the United States search for it per month on average, and your email shows which month gets the most searches. It's an estimate: Google doesn't release exact numbers.

First look up your main term: the words a customer types in when they need you. Then pick the related keywords that fit what you offer, and pay attention to the questions people ask. Finally, use the keyword rank checker to see which keywords your site is already on page 1 for, so you know which terms you need to create or improve a page for.

Google Trends shows how interest in a search term develops, on a scale of 0 to 100. That's a relative line: 100 is the highest point in the chosen period, not a number of searches. This tool gives an estimated number of searches per month. So Trends shows when a term peaks, and this tool shows how big it is.

The numbers come from similar sources, but Keyword Planner requires a Google Ads account, and without an ad budget you often only get broad ranges. This tool shows an estimate for each keyword, without an account.
